Hello, my name is Shalein, and I acquired my first black Great Dane puppy in 1984. Her name was HIT Cheshire’s Cleopatra V. Aztec CDX HOF. This six-month-old puppy “Cleo” had been returned to the breeder because she was fearful of men. Even though “Cleo” was the pick of litter, I knew it would be difficult to show her in conformation due to her being afraid of men, so I decided it would be better to show her in obedience. Cleo and I won several high in trials and the 1990 California and 1989 St. Louis Nationals. Her highest score was at an all-breed AKC show where she earned a 199 ½ in Novice. Cleo went on to become one of the all time high scoring obedience dogs in the history of the breed. An award, the “Cleo Award,” was named in her honor and given out for five consecutive years at the Great Dane Club of America Nationals. The Cleo Award was given to the top winning obedience dog at the GDCA Nationals.
I bred Cleo to the top conformation black dog Ch. Longo’s Primo D’ Aquino. I kept a male puppy that I named Cheshire’s Want-A-be Somthin’ CD. Want-A-Be followed in his mother’s footsteps, winning several high in trials and the Philadelphia Nationals in 1993. Want-A-Be even won one of his mother’s awards, the Cleo Award.
I'm a graduate from Colorado State and my specialty interest is in reproduction and genetics. In fact, while in vet school I was awarded three AKC scholarships for my genetics research program of the Great Dane.
Today, in my spare time you will find me showing at the conformation ring. This gives me the opportunity to continue to breed and show this magnificent breed.
